Ok so getting ready to start collecting parts to do this on my 75 cj5 jeep and was wandering if a 93-98 ZJ grand cherokee exhaust manifold will work and if not what year do i need to look for. Also does it matter what year the valve cover comes from?

I was looking at Clearwaters head on eBay for 425 and that has 3 angle valve job and the water jackets are already welded I have only found 1 pearson that has used them online and he said he has had no issues and it's been about a year. So from what I have read any 4.0 manifold and valve cover will work correct? And I will be using my ofenhauser intake with a holley 390 carb being I already have them on my jeep now.

Certainly any manifold will bolt up - I'd only worry that the outlet was in the right place, and that it did not interfere with steering, the fender, etc.

I hear that the JB Weld method works fine. I can send you a baggie full of soluble packing peanuts if you need them.

    Does $425 include shipping?

Have you looked in to how much local reconditioning of a 4.0L head would cost? If cost were no object, I'd go with a new head. Otherwise, I'd look for a used 7120 or 0630 head and have it reconditioned locally. A 3-angle grind is nothing special - any quality rebuilder will do that routinely. Hot rod builders will include more angles. More general discussion about head reconditioning is available if you are interested.

Read this thread at JeepStrokers.com - http://www.jeepstrokers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=241 - it provides an overview of wihch castings to look for.

Yes it's 400 plus 25 shipping and the cast # is 7120, I will have to check the local shops to see what they would charge to rework a head. I know the local dealer wants 385 for a new head so I would only be saving a few bucks but would have to do the water jackets. As far as junk yards I haven't checked just decided to peruse this so just been working the Internet the last 2 days reading up. So do you not recommend the Clearwater head timgr

Hmm. No, not necessarily. It's not what I'd choose, mostly because of the risk of buying something like that over the internet. Plus I can afford the new head, if I needed one. Doesn't seem like that much of a premium over the rebuilt head. I recall the new head is the 0331 casting, revised to avoid its cracking problems.

If $100-200 is a critical issue, you should be able to get a used head for less than $100 and have it refurbished for another $200 or so... a lot depends on prices in your area. Welding seems like the hardest way to seal those holes. Sealing them with JB Weld is common, and your machine shop should be able to fit core plugs easily. Find a shop that will do the work, and ask for a quote on the plug method. This will give you an idea of how much of a premium the welding adds.

Ok Timgr I spoke with a head shop here in Houston that has a gold star with the Better Business Bureau, they have never heard of this upgrade but are not scared to take on task. They have a 6130 cast head and ready to go he said for $450 but he needs to know what all is involved in changing the head, is there a write up of it some were on what water jackets need to be done and is that all that needs to be changed?
