I just cant afford 300 bucks for a DUI but dont want to buy junk, plus i am trying to save money to do the 4.0 head swap any advise would be great

I found a DUI hei unit on craigslist with the some nice DUI brand wires for $100, with little use. I understand its not common to find this, but search around and you may get lucky. Otherwise, an HEI unit sourced from a mid 70s to mid 80s 250 chevy. You just need to change the drive gear to a 304 gear from what I read. I researched it, and for personal preference, Im a fan of the integrated design resulting in less wiring in the engine compartment. But thats just me.
The drive gear, in my reading, is the only weak point in the CTR units, so it seems to me just sourcing new one, or re-using your old gear would work fine. Just remember to factor in the cost of larger wires into the total cost. I really like the "live wires" brnd that DUI sells, but they are pretty spendy-about $90, but if they hadnt come with the hei, I dont think I would have bought them.

man thats a sweet deal thats like a once in a life time price right there, i dont want to go used just due to junk yards here want almost new prices for stuff so whats 40 bucks to have a new one. Hey timgr whats it take to do a duraspark swap im going to have to buy it on ebay or new i have called a few yards around here and there exact words its 25-30% off the cost of a new one so i would rather buy it new, i guess when you live in the big cities they want big prices.

I've used CRT distributors twice and they both dropped in and worked like they should.

    Soooooooooooooooo,
What is the down fall with a CRT dist?
    What are the up sides?
If I want to use a Chevy 250 HEI in my 232, I have to find a 304 drive gear? Can't the point gear work?

So after having my arm twisted about the DUI from a buddy that has one I called them and even after spending 300 bucks I was told it would be best to swap the cam gear that they could not confirm that there dist gear would not eat my current cam gear. So I Think buying a cheaper dist is the best way to go if you still have to change the dang cam gear to keep it from being destroyed.

I bought a CRT HEI and dropped it in my 258, ran it for a few hundred miles, then sold it to a friend who has been running it for about 3 years now. As far as I know, no gears were harmed in the making of this statement.

summit racing sells pertronix ignition it replaces all the guts in the dist and hooks to the coil or you can hook it to the control module you currently have. the part comes with good instructions more info here http://www.pertronix.com/
