So I have my engine ready to pull and hopefully will do it tomorrow. I have everything disconnected except the motor mounts, so here's my question. What do I attach a chain to to remove the engine? There are no lifting rings on the engine and my dad said not to wrap the chain around the motor because it will crush the oil pan. My dad suggested that I remove one of the intake manifold bolts and put another bolt in to attach the chain to and then do the same on the other side with another bolt. I know some one here has dealt with this type of engine before and would like to know how you handled it.

When I pulled out my 258, I removed two head bolts, one on the rear drivers side and one on the front passengers side. The bolts were then passed thru the end links of a 3-4 ft chain which was connected to an engine hoist.

Yep, I've used some new grade 8 bolts and washers and have used the intake manifold bolt holes, as well as other holes that might be available on the front and rear of the heads (on a V8 anyway).

Thanks guys. Rick I think I will try what you suggested. Nwedgar, I think my father has mostly removed V8's so he is used to having the manifolds on both sides rather than just on one side like the six.

I would also suggest removing the valve cover first to prevent any damage to it by the chain.

I use one front manifold hole and one bellhousing hole on the opposite side.

Let me make sure I have this right before I break something or injure myself. First, I should take off the valve cover to keep it from getting damaged. Second, I should remove the bolts that you guys mentioned. Third, I should get some grade 8 bolts that will fit the holes I removed the bolts from and that will be long enough to fit through the chain links. Fourth, I should be able to hoist out the engine. Does that sound correct?

Get washers too. Yes, that sounds correct.

I've used two slings and ran it under the oilpan.
It worked great and no damage.

I removed the valve cover and cylinder head.

From the hardware store, I bought four large screw eyes (they were 4-6 inches long) with threads that matched the head bolts. Screw the screw eyes into the head bolt holes on all four corner of the engine. Use some heavy chain and buy link connectors. Feed the chains through the screw eyes and use the connectors to loop the ends of the chain together.

With four screw eyes, the weight was distributed evenly. The screw eyes did not bend at all with the weight and did no damage to the head bolt holes.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I ended up going to the hardware store and getting two grade 8 bolts and washers to replace one bellhousing and one intake manifold bolt. I ran the bolts and washers through the links of a chain attached to the hoist. It wasn't easy removing it in a gravel driveway but I put down some plywood and just rearranged the plywood as I went along so that I could roll it into the garage. Check out my build thread for the pictures.
