T-176 problem

I bought a t-176, dana 300 from a local guy, thinking I could use the t-176 in place of the existing t-5 and use it behind the 360 to be installed. There seems to be a problem with the tranny and that is I cant get it to go into reverse sitting on the garage floor. Any ideas what the problem could be, is this the common problem with these transmissions that I think I recall reading about somewhere? Something about the top cover? Also do you think the T-5 would hold up to light v-8 power? Thanks for any input.

O wouldn't use the t-5 behind a 360. Seen way too many of them broken.
Pull the shifter top and check or out. The tops get worn, particularly the pivots for the shifter. Iirc the reverse idler slides for reverse so shouldn't be much to go wrong there

Depends on the problem. Sometimes they can be fixed. Check the pivot pins for the shifter. They come loose and sometimes can be repaired.

I did this. take the top cover off and put it back while making sure the reverse fork actually goes on the reverse idler.

Well turns out I have a much bigger problem, took the top off, the entire tranny is junk. Its had water sitting in it for quite some time, gears are so rusted they are pitted.. I will always look inside from now on before I buy. Lesson learned the hard way.
