72' Intermediate Body to Frame hardware list

Have received a few pm's regarding the body to frame hardware use... I use stainless grade 5 myself to replace the original during this last inspection and nylon 3/4" spacers

Well, here goes....
Used Ace Hardware to procure washers (12 X 2" outside diameter for 3/8" sst bolts). Original body to frame utilized wood and canvas on different mount points. Served well for many years, but finally deteriorated and required replacement. This 39 year inspection, we decided on 3/4" red nylon bushing body to frame Mount package purchased from Collins Brothers Jeep. Red chosen for easy visual inspections.

Suggest the use of Grade 5 because of a high shear tolerance, grade 8 has a lower shear threshold but, is much stronger for loads that will stress/ pull from head to base....

The body to frame hardware endures a shearing action from information gleaned from Automotive Engineers in past. Personally utilize Grade five (5) for any/all "shear related loads".

Everyone, has their viewpoint regarding body/ frame load characteristics. IMPORTANT, please ensure to torque with care. dependent upon bolt diameter, also, use an appropriate locknut or other hardware of your choice to secure.

(12) cushion mounts,
(16) thin shim washers,
(6) 3/8" X 2 1/2" bolts,
(4) 3/8" X 4" carriage bolts
(1) 7/16" X 2 1/2" bolt ( grill center bolt )
(6) 1/2" cushion mounts,
(4) thick 2" X 2" shim washers
(6) 3/8" lockwashers
(10) 3/8" nuts
(1) 7/16" nut

Hopefully, other Owners will provide additional viewpoints and hardware lists with further information?

I need to do mine but I've decided I want more of the original style rubber mounts.
I personally think that soft mounts help let the whole Jeep "system" flex a little here and there instead of stiffening up one part to let another take the load.
I put polyurethane mounts in a YJ and noticed an immediate increase in road noise and creaking and groaning from the body panels flexing.
Luckily they still had OEM body mounts available. I switched them out and all was better than before instead of worse.

I have had no luck finding OEM or NOS body mounts,though.
Only the "in fashion" poly.

 

I'm doing this right now also. Same initial shopping list...although I am letting the body sit for awhile on the poly mounts to see if anything naturally closes the gaps etc. before actually buying the bolts. I did find that the poly kits out there have all the same size pucks and that's not really what fits for each location, seems like the front floor board area needs a little more..

You can buy rubber body mount "tube" that's 24" I believe, you just have to cut your own pucks out of it, but the center hole is there (4wd.com has it).

 

Remember to use anti-sieze lube on stainless steel. The stainless will gall up. I initially used stainless and at the time didn't realize the importance of anti-sieze lube. I found out taking one of the bolts back out for something (can't remember what for) was a pain, so I took all the stainless hardware out of all the mounts and went back with grade 5 zinc coated hardware.

 

Have seen pictures of older model JEEP's with springs on the underside of the body mounts with castle nuts and cotter pin retainers. While stumbling around the junkyard, I came across some nice size beehive shaped springs. They are probably for the exhaust head pipe on the sidewinder front wheel drive cars. Without too much effort I managed to collect enough to do the whole tub just from what was already laying on the ground. My plan is to use the new poly bushings the PO installed with longer bolts and these springs.
Should be up to the task and they are chrome!
