I am getting ready to adjust the brakes on my '50 CJ3A. Pads and drums look good. Pulled the wheels , and noticed the hubs are installed outside the brake drums. On my CJj5 they are installed behind the hubs. Should the hubs be behind the drums? On the front the wheel lugs seem to seated into the brake drum. Which is correct for a 25 front axle and 41 rear axle?

The 9' brakes are a different animal than 10" ones, the way you described your '3A sounds correct.

One of the biggest issues with getting this type of brake to work is getting all the cams freed up so that they can move freely. This usually involves a complete disassembly and cleaning of all parts and components. Clean up all the parts with a wire wheel and reassemble with a liberal dose of anti-seize.

After it is all back together, adjust the upper cams to retract the shoes all the way. Adjust the anchor pins at the bottom so that the shoes just barely scrape the drum, and then back it off a hair so the drum urns freely. Tighten the anchor pins and move to the eccentric cams, moving the cams just enough until the shoes just drag on the drums. Tighten the cams and you're done!
