Hey all! I just picked up my new 64 CJ5 earlier this week and am starting to go through it. One thing I was curious about was the "bed rails" that are attached to it. The mounts for them look very factory, anyone seen anything like this before?

Mounts are factory, rails are not. But clever!

Fun looking project! The bed rails are homemade, but look almost factoty. Those mounting points are for the factory soft top bows.

What year did they do away with those mounts? I know dad's 69 and my 70 have the front holes, but not the rear ones.

The bow pockets are a vestige from the M38A1. Most civilian tops did not use the rear bow pockets. The midships pockets lasted until the major transformation in 1976. Not sure which year they went away - guess? 1960ish.

I was wondering if it didn't have something to do with the soft top. Amazing how perfectly it lined up with the cab. I'm planning to keep them, but I think I'm going to try and get them out and cut them down so they only stick up ~3" or so, we'll see how that radius comes out. The cab is going, so they'd look a little goofy without it I think.

I still had them on my '60.

Looking at those rails I can see a removable rack setup to fit more gear in your JEEP in the making.

A half-cab is highly sought after. Just FYI. I'd absolutely keep it. Someone will want it if you don't.

I believe it is already sold to another brother on here. Just need to work out meeting up. This is going to be a pretty low budget project, so the money from that top is going to help immensely with some capitol.

Then keep the bed rails the way they are.
Some cushions on the wheel wells and they provide rear seating with backs for rear passengers.

I had thought so, but maybe not. All the M38A1 pictures I can find on the internet have the folding top, not the top with the rigid bows that goes in the pockets. Maybe it's a carry-over from the flatties instead.

Until they came out with the folding type bows the CJ-5 most definitely utilized the bow pockets, so I guess you could call them carry-overs as far as the design aspect.
