Flasher switch

    I am looking for a flasher switch for my resto/mod 55 CJ5.

I found one in a postal Jeep in the junk yard the other day that had a red knob like the old headlight knobs but it was red and said "flasher" on it. I can't seem to find anything like this and want to know if anyone here has seen one for sale anywhere?

    Thanks,
    Shawn

Hmmm. Wish I had posted a picture first. Here's the pic of the one I found. The switch itself was broken up.

If that knob has a set screw you could use it on a light switch.

It does. I was actually thinking that. I guess I would just need to figure out how to wire it correctly and I would have left over terminals.

You can't use another stock head light switch because it one terminal that is not connected to the other three when pulled all the way out. You need a switch that has 4 terminals that are all connected when "ON" and none connected to each other when OFF.

Ok. I am missing something here.

My '60 Willys has a SignalStat 900 clamped to the steering column. Has the flasher built into it. There is no place on the dash for a flasher switch unless I drill another mounting hole or use the one the hand throttle comes through (that is the only one I really don't need for every day operation).

I don't remember a switch on the dash of any of my jeeps over the years, excepting maybe the '78 Cherokee which I no longer have, so cannot run out and check it.

This switch is off of a DJ(Postal Jeep). I know it's not original to "My" Jeep but that's not what I'm really going for here. The Spartan turn signal switches I have here don't have provisions for flashers.

All turn-signal switches have a provision for a flasher other wise they would not be called turn signals. I don't know when the four way flasher became a requirement by the gov't but my 66 did not come with one. Any turn signal switch can be wired in conjunction with a four-way flasher.

Stick a couple of those red flags under a seat and take your kid along with you. HE can be your emergency flasher by waving them frantically when ever another car happens by!

Just kidding of course. We all know people who don't drive jeeps won't see them any way, no matter what you do!

And I think some one here has a wiring diagram for hooking up 4-way flashers to your existing turn signals.

I don't really get how this switch can be wired for flashers when there isn't provisions for it. I'm actually thinking this switch came out of a DJ also.

The provision for the flasher portion of the turn signal switch is in a remote location. The turn sig flasher is mounted on a stud behind the dash and will be a three prong can like a signalstat 550 or such if you use the indicator light built into the Sparton turn-signal switch. If you want to install a 4-way flashing circuit then you have to install a switch with 4 seperate terminals and it's own flasher can wired to the input of the 4-way switch and the 4-way output will be wired to the same wires as the main turn-signal (Sparton) switch.

You understand that a '55 would not have had emergency flashers? Flashers were not required (or even present) until the mid-60s. The flasher on the SignalStat turn signal switch likely comes from an era much later than 1955, and was retrofitted to the Jeep.

I expect that even turn signals were still optional in 1955.

Personally, I think the emergency flashers are not very useful. When I see them in use, they are flashing on illegally double-parked cars. Very seldom are they used for their intended purpose.

Only one tail/brake light was required by the Government at that time. Hand signals were the norm.

This Jeep is also an M38A1 so it didn't have signals.
