Pics of how you mounted your old school stand up winch...?

    Got me this old Warn 8000lb winch today and am trying to decide how exactly to make my new bumper. Does anyone have pics they can share of how they mounted theirs? Jeep is a '57 CJ5.

    Not sure if you can see in this pic, but I welded a mounting plate on the backside of the bumper and cut an opening for the cable to go through the bumper. The fairlead bolts go through the bumper into winch. The bumper is 1/4" wall tubing, so it's plenty stout. I wish I had a better pic.

    Check out the month of June in the 2012 ECJ5 calander.
    It's Grade 8 bolt mounted to 1/4" thk. SST plate which is welded to the Sq. tube bumper and bumper hoop, then the bumper assembly is Grade 8 bolted to the frame.

    While the winch is sitting around, make sure you tie up the brake lever or you will end up breaking it. They are VERY easy to break. You can use any 8274 mounting plate by adding two more holes outboard a couple inches. If you do a search you can find a template pretty easy. My current avatar has a shot if you save it and zoom.

    Should note that both the back of the bumper, cable slot and frame horns are boxed on this. The bumper back is 1/4", rest 3/16". It is best to mount them low. It both keeps the pull angle better when you are augered in and makes for less airflow restriction to the radiator. It also lets you string the cable under the Jeep for a reverse pull if using a roller fairlead.

    I wanted my winch to sit lower so as to not block air flow to the radiator. I welded a solid plate on the back side of the bumper and extended my bumper down to protect the winch on the trail

    If using the stock bumper, you may have to recess the mount if going with a "low" mount. It's pretty tight between the bumper and grille. My upright Warn will fit, but not if you add the thickness of a mounting plate mounted to the inside of the bumper.
     
  10. I mounted my plate on the outside of the bumper, an welded all the way around then cutout both for the cable, december calender pic.

    Thanks guys. I like the idea of keeping it lower and to where it pulls inline with the frame. The plate setups look simple enough, maybe I'll keep the stock bumper after all(I had planned to build a whole new one...). Another thing I gotta do is figure out the controls for it, it came without any.

    The controls were all cable, with the winch motor on a cable actuated heavy duty switch. I found a HD solenoid and a push button starter switch to be a lot less of a maintenance problem and you can make a remote using it. You should be able to find heavy cables at most parts houses, but they need to be at least twice as heavy as a choke cable.

    Here's a picture of my Warn 5687. It is bolted to a steel plate that was welded to the inside of the bumper. The cable feed is through the bumper.

    On another note, i picked up Ramsey's 3/8 cable 125' long from Summit Racing for like $86 last weekend. thought that was a good price on 3/8 cable.

    I have the same old style Warn with cables on the dash. I do not like the way it works and would much rather have the remote control. Can these be retrofit to take a remote? Power in only is also a draw back.
    Has anyone converted their cable style to a remote style to put the power on a togle and not on a dash mouned truning handle?
