I just rebuilt rochester 2g carb float was sticking and it was missing both check balls. soaked carb in dunk tank washed venturi assembly and other parts in ultrasonic washer, reassembled. Before installing it on the manifold i found there were two ports in the manifold totally pluged up one on each side of the block, vacuumed out the debris from the holes and then installed carb. Adjusted carb by ear, I dont have a vac guage (if someone could suggest a reasonably priced one). engin idles great but it is backfirin on the even cylinders only. swapped #6 and#4 wires with some i had laying around. no change. lookin for some suggestions.:v6:

Did these symptoms appear after the carb overhaul, or was it acting up before?

Iwas doing it prio as well jut it would not run very long, as soon as the bowl over flowed it would flood and stall. I am going to get new plug wires and a new condenser today hopefully.

If this jeep is new to you, it's possible previous owner installed an even fire dist. That would cause the symptoms you describe.

If it is an odd fire dist, the dist must be aligned to an odd number tower on the dist cap correctly, not just aligned to any plug wire correctly.

The cap wont tell if the dist is correct. Need to verify the cam lobes on the dist shaft.

    Is this points or HEI?

If this is a points distributor, pull the cap off, then pull the rotor off and look at the lobe where the points ride right in the middle of the shaft. You may or may not be able to do this in the vehicle (it will take some contorting). If the lobes have two flat spots then a hump alternating all the way around, you have an odd fire dist. If the flat spots on the lobe are evenly spaced, then you have an even fire dist.

If HEI, pull the cap/coil off, then pull the rotor off and look at the magnetic pickup located at the base of the dist (you should be able to do this in the vehicle). If the points on the magnetic pickup are not equally spaced, you have an odd fire. If the points on the magnetic pickup are equally spaced, you have an even fire.

i bought the wrong cap an it did the same thing, the parts stores show later cap on 68 an theres just enough difference to make it run crappy also very easy to check just takes a minute and more likly than wrong distributor
