  1. well the first cluster gear gave up the ghost, from what i am reading it is different than the t90 so rebuild cost just went up.
Any good advise would be appreciated

Maybe put T-90 gears in the T-86 case? Common mod, was done at the dealer back in the day. One shift fork and all gears will need swapped.

Put the SM465 in, you won't be sorry. Love that transmission.

SM465 will require an adaptor to the D18 - Novak and AA have them real short. You will also need to work out the clutch setup. Personally, I would (and did) go with the SM465, but don't kid yourself - depending on tranny and clutch/pedals your looking at 800 to 1K in total cost for the swap. I know 'some guys' can do it cheaper, and I wish them the best and wish I could get the deals they do. After many swaps of T18s and SM465s that is the cost I am getting with some wiggle, but that is the budget I am using from now on.

If you decide to go with a T90 rebuild, PM me and we can talk about parts. I have racks of T90 stuff available if you need them.

  7. after cyphering for a while an big teary eyes at the wife it looks like the sm465 is the way to go. adapter from Herm is 475 any other costs involved

Clutch, clutch linkage, drivelines front and rear, floor mods, crossmember mods, transmission rebuild kit, etc, etc.
Having said all that, it's a great mod and once done you shouldn't have to worry about the trans ever again.

  9. Thanks guys after sleeping on it an reading a little more ( your posts) I dont think i want to waste half the summer with my rig in the garage, think I'll go with the t90. Good quick rebuild then maybe prepare for the sm465 conversion a little more. I love wrenchin but I am the kind of guy that has to get a plan first an make it happen all at once.

  10. well here is all the damage cluster gear, first gear, second gear, and reveese idler.

Sorry about your gears - but it seems like a lot of these transmissions come to an end like this. I expect the T-90 gears will be a little stronger, since 1st and reverse are straight cut... but not much. A T-15 is another option.

  12. dontya just love a tranny you can totaly disassemble with two screwdrivers, a snap ring pliers, pocketknife, drift punch an hammer, on yer tailgate and in under 20 minutes:), wish i had some parts, I'd be buttoning it back up by now.

  13. well a little update an some pics later, One of the guys here sold me an awesome t90 ( complete so I didn't have to do a rebuild) so Iget it all ready to go cleaned up an ready for paint. Go to put the adapter on it an it doesn't have the same bolt pattern in front. So I'll be putting the t90 guts into the t86 should only take a few minutes. I want to thank him again he went out of his way to set me up, putting his own projects on hold to send me this tranny.

Yes, sorry that was not made clear. The T-90 case has a smaller front pattern than the T-86 case. I've seen the T-86/T-14 adapters redrilled to fit the T-90, but that's probably not as good as switching the gears to your case. The T-86 is basically a T-14/T-15-patterned T-90, with the beveled gears and spiral splines.

With all good gears and shafts put in there, you shouldn't have to worry about it for a long time.

Glad to see it all worked out for you in the end ;) I should have thought about the adaptor diff as well, but for some reason I thougth you had the T90 adaptor too.

As easy as they are to work on - it makes little issues like this pretty moot.
