Any one have instructions on tearing down and inspection of a T-18 / T-98 Shift Tower? Also, anyone come up with a good reverse switch setup?

What exactly do you want to do to your shift tower?

I would like to tear it down inspect for wear paint the top and re-assemble, The manual I have does not cover this operation and I'm not sure how to get the shift rails out. Also I was woundering if anyone has hook up a sensor to the reverse shift rail for reverse lights.

You'll prolly be piecing that together. I saw a site some time ago that the guy sealed up a T90 with caps, and drilled and tapped a hole in one of the caps for a reverse light switch off a semi. I think he said that he bought the switch at NAPA. IIRC, the rail came up against the switch when reverse was engaged and activated it that way.

you should be able to get a backup switch. if it is a T18 it will be easy to get. i am not sure if my T98 shifter had the backup switch. As for tower disassembly, look at Dr. Verns site for the T98 rebuild, i believe it is in there, i know i took mine apart and i had instructions to do so.

I have a shift tower assy I got a long time ago that has the reverse switch setup in it. I put it on and it fit the tranny fine, seemed to work OK but the shift cane was a different shape and hits against the dash. I tried to swap my old shift cane into the newer tower but it was just different enough that it didn't work. So, since I didn't want to mess with modifying or bending the newer cane I put the original tower back on and just use a manual switch for the rear lights.

If you or anyone else wants this other tower with the reverse setup already in it let me know. I paid $65 for it and if I can get that back out of it (plus shipping) that would be great.

My experience with shift canes is the difference is the length of the shifter from the "ball seat" to the bottom of the shifter where it sticks into the tranny. IF the ball is a separate pressed on piece (some are one piece machined) I have had good luck heating them up, then using a tube, hammer, vise, etc to move the ball seat to adjust the length of the shifter. Then a small spot weld to hold the ball in its new place. I have some pics if interested.

Both my new and old t18s (old reverse right and up, new reverse right and back) have switches for a backup light.

I just remembered I have a MOTOR brand transmission manual from my college days ($65!!!). It has a t18 section for Jeep (no cover disassemble details, just a diagram) and Ford t18 section, with details. I can scan and email if you like.
