I know how to adjust the valves, but what I don't know, is how everyone is able to do it alone?? I don't have a ratchet that's 3' long or an extra arm to turn it from underneath while I watch the valves. Anybody got a trick to this?

If you figure it out let me know, my valve adjust (intake and exhaust) has been on hold for weeks waiting for my friend or be available...

I just looked in my two manuals doesn't seem hard but if its a matter of space you may think about pulling off your fender. Ive noticed Jeep fender removal is an easy way to access you engine compartment.

Take out the sparkplugs and you can turn the engine with the fanbelt. Maybe.

Plus, with a finger in the plug hole you can feel the compression stroke for TDC.

Hmm...I take the spark plugs out anyway; I'll try moving it with the fan and see how that goes.

I know...lol...that's what I've been doing all along. I'm just saying that I don't have a 3' ratchet to reach down there (and have enough "swing" on the ratchet) to be able to do that AND keep an eye on the valves opening and closing.

Like PeteL said with the plugs out & tranny in neutral you should be able to turn it by pulling/pushing on the belt- BTDT

I tried, but didn't work. Maybe the belt isn't tight enough, but it just spins on the crankshaft pulley.

Push on the belt slack between the pulleys and it should tighten and grab as you pull the fan. Or tension the belt normally.

Used to have a MG, and I set the valves by leaving it in gear and rocking the car back and forth with the plugs out. Now a jeep may weigh a little more than an MG, and I was quite a bit younger....

But, just the other day I set the intakes on the jeep, using the plugs-out fan/fanbelt method. But my belt is new, and it was pretty snug.....watch your knuckles and fingers!

Maybe you aren't old enough yet?
That is how I do mine. On what ever vehicle. Just remember to put it in neutral or you will be trying to move the whole vehicle that way. It is how I do my timing also. (static, that is)

The use of a mirror to watch the valve movement works as well.

I've been turning the fan blades with plugs out with good success, even with cold temps and thicker oil. Just beats up my hands a bit.

There is a good video on how to set the valves on a 134f using the opposing cylinder method on youtube. It sure simplifies timing and things. Helped me out anyway.
