A couple of years ago I replaced the rear oil seal on my D-18 transfer case . When I ordered the seal. I was sent part# 18670.04. It looked exactly like the seal that I had pulled out. About a month ago I replaced the front seal. Though I had an new extra seal (18670.04) from when I had replaced the rear, I went ahead and ordered a couple of more seals as spares. When I received the seals, I noticed that they were not identical to the one that I pulled from the transfer case nor the one that I already had on hand (18670.04). These seals were part# 8123077. The back side of these seals was open. They did not have a rim. They only had a front and outside rim. The package for the 18670.04 indicates that it replaces the original the original 8123077. I went ahead and used the 18670.04 as it that matched what I had pulled.

Does anyone know why the original part was replaced? Is the original part bad? Has anyone ever used one? I was just wondering if I should keep the 8123077s for spares, or just throw them away????

I tried to paste a photo of the 2 seals in this post, but it wouldn't let me.

It would help to give some details about the T-18 - original transmission? Year?

The 8123077 number could be Jeep, but my book says the proper number is a 939335. The other numbers are some aftermarket supplier's numbers. RockAuto crosses the Jeep PN to a SKF 21210 http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=1836126

A local parts store should be able to get a seal for you easily.

You need to use an off-site photo hosting site, and link or embed your link here. No local photo hosting on this forum.

I apologize. I mistakenly listed the subject of my post as a T-18 problem. I meant to have referred to the D-18 (transfer case). The seals are for the transfer case.

My vehile is a 1971 CJ5 V6. All of the drivetrain is original: T-86 transmission and single stick D-18 tranfer case.

Just difference in manufacturing to fit as many applications as possible. A little tip here. Before installing the seal pack the open area with Petroleum jelly to keep the garter spring from popping out of place during installation.

923896 was the old part number.
It was the double lipped seal, that also came with the felt and paper gasket.
It was superceded by Jeep to the 812 3077 number; these seals were single lip, but had either a red or green teflon coating around the outside of the seal body to prevent leaks; this seal would have gone into production about the time the Qtracs hit the market, so circa 1973 if I recall.
The old double lipped seal, felt, and paper gasket still come in some the gasket and seal kits available.
It's the seal set-up I prefer to use.
