I am looking for information on how the stock fuel pickup/sender unit is sealed to the tank.

I have an old seal/gasket that needs to be replaced, and it is too damaged to tell for sure if it started life as an "O" ring, or a flat washer/gasket. The old unit looks like an O ring that has been flattened from years of being squeezed together when installed, but it could also be a flat washer that has been distorted by the years of being installed.

I am sorry, but I do not know the year of the tank, so I have been unable to look it up in a parts catalog.

Anybody know if this is just a simple item, available at the FLAPS, or is it a speciallized part that only a Jeep speciality house will have??

The needed part is for the left hand pickup hole shown below.

You are correct, the right one is for the Chevy fuel pickup/pump. I added it because I am using a fuel injected Chevy engine. It is sealed with an "O" ring, but the stock hole is the one I need to find the correct seal/gasket for.

I'm guessing it's a '76 or later tank, judging by the size of the filler nozzle, and the presence of the hold down strap. The intermediate Jeeps have a larger filler inlet ca 2-3" diam, with a separate 3/4" diam vent line. They also use brackets to support the tank, separate from the skid plate.

MTS shows a flat rubber gasket for these years, but I believe an o-ring was used with the original steel tanks. http://www.mtscompany.com/jeep.htm

Good eye Tim, the filler is only an inch or slightly more.

If the flange area is flat then use a flat rubber gasket. If there is a groove around it then you would use an "O" ring. The flat gasket will not seal in the groove flange because it will cup in time and will squish out of shape.
