Yes always clean your weld surface. Makes welding a lot easier and consistant.

    Build looks good too!

Even more critical when you Mig weld. Bright and shiney will make the welder happy.

Continued the work on the flat fenders. I ordered the kit from Extreme Custom which was pretty inexpensive ($150) but I can tell the kit was designed for the 70's/80's model CJ5 (no matter what their website says). The bottom of the fenders ran 7 inches wide, which was almost touching the tires that are currently on my rig. So I cut them back 4 inches and mocked them up today to see how they'd look.

I also wrapped the dash in a vinyl carbon fiber from 3M. Then I moved onto mocking up the rear armor and continued the work of getting the hood straight.

I shot two coats, have a lot of mixed feelings since the color was suppose to be a dark champaign (low gloss) and it came out very gold and glossy as hell. I stopped after two coats so I can color sand it and add some black to darken the tint of the paint before applying the third and final coat- maybe next weekend if time permits.

Color seems like a fair cry from how it looks on the sample from the website:

Zsa Zsa Gabor would love it... But then again she's been married 9 times.

    Darken it up... IMO.

I actually like it. A black windshield frame will make a big difference

I too like the color, nowhere close to what you thought you were getting but it does look good.

The more I look at it, the more upset I'm getting. I decided to email the company and give thecoatingsstore.com the business.:dead horse:

Understand I was trying to come as close as I could to the ICON CJ3B below: (I know that rig is powder coated)

I'd have to add black to the base, and add some acetone to cut it and reduce the gloss. But even then there is no guarantee. Feel like I'm at a cross roads here. . .

On my monitor, pic 1 & 2 look more gold, but pic 3 of the cowl looks almost identical to the sample.

I agree if you darken it, you'll likely get the effect you want.

    Keep us posted! :tea:

X2! Pic 3 is a lot closer to the sample. It looks good to me as is but I do agree darker would probably be better. Waiting to see what the paint people say.

I just ordered 6 ounces of black metallic tint. I'll add 3 ounces to the 2/3 gallon of paint I have left, see what it looks like, and add the other 3 ounces if it isn't dark enough.

Paint is darkening in the sun as it dries, but its still not dark enough for my tastes.

Air pressure and fan size play a big part in the final color of a metallic paint lower pressure is darker. gun distance plays a part too. I'd spray some practice pieces to play with the color.
