Hood notch theory, I had speculated that it was for wiring harness for temorary accessories like plow lights etc, $.02

Hood/fender notch. I asked Rick Pewe this question when he was here one time for a trail ride (remember when JP Magazine was good?). Rick said it was for the wires going out to a fender mounted blackout light on military versions.

I use it for the cord to my block heater.

I read that the notch was used for auxuillary power, the Air-Force/or Navy used to use some of their M38/A1 vehicles to jump start aircraft.

The aux power on an m38a1 (cj5) would be on the passenger side of the body tub down by where the cj5 says jeep but the m38a1 has a round indent for it. The m38 has the cut out on the hood for the snorkel and for the aux power cable. The little notch is left over from the m38a1 for the fender mounted blackout driving light, the wires for it would run under the hood there.

thank you i stand corrected, was looking at some old pics looked as though the leads were coming out of the drive side but after looking more closer seen they were running along the fender in a shadow. thanks for straightening me out......

That's what I use mine for, the wiring harness for my tow bar.
