Not sure. It's a "stock" '66. I have to check what the axles are.

Steamer: ask vanguard what happens when you don't stake the screw or use loctite putting it back together

the only knock on the lock-o-matics was they don't enage when backing up
of course in deep mud or snow you should probably lock them in
    your choice I suppose
keep 'em and clean 'em up

We never trusted the auto lock feature anyway; always locked them manually. Plus, since we didn't know better, a mechanic friend of Dad's learned the hard way how NOT to take them off to start with. (didn't realize there was a set screw in the lock ring that has the rubber on it. Just drove them off with a punch as I recall. One rubber is cut and the ring on the other side has an odd wear pattern, like "somebody" didn't quite get it lined up with the holes in the lock washer behind it last time "he" took them off.... doofus. They still work, but they are (were) stiff to turn. Now then, what's behind the set screw that's staked? No doubt not staking it back when I'm done means I would redistribute some valuable parts along the trail.... oooh, bad! Hello, Herm?? He's on my "what's next?" list, anyway......

I bought mine from the earlycj5 fraternity (Brannon Westall) for $35. They are the old style Warn "lock-o-matics". The look cool. Haven't tested them yet, due to the inprocess 225 transplant. Anyone have any comments on these "old style" hubs?

After you tighten the set screw (it's countersunk, so it sits flat with the surface) you take a center punch and hit right in the space at edge of the screw head; say half the impact is on the screw head and half on the surface of whatever it's screwed into. Forces the metals to deform, and acts similar to a lock washer, helps prevent the screw from backing out. To remove the screw then, you must first remove that deformed metal enough to loosen the screw again. Next time you pick a different spot, and start over. In my case, I don't know what's under the piece I would be removing, and I ain't sure I want to learn the hard way why I shouldna done that.......

Jerry, I've never met anybody who thoroughly trusted them to engage automatically; on the other hand, I've never heard of anybody having one side fail to lock, or have one only turn in part way. I always figured that if one didn't lock all the way, I'd tear something up. I dunno, my mind ain't so good at doing all the thinking sometimes; surely somebody will set me straight here. Dad just got in the habit of manually locking them for peace of mind, so I did, too. Mine needed some cleaning and grease a long time ago, I just hadn't gotten to it. If they are stiff, they're a bear to "turn in"; I used the handles on a pair of channel-lock pliers for leverage (muddy fingers ain't much for grip, needed a cheater)

FWIW I've had the Warn standard hubs for around 8-9 years with no issues.

IIRC under the staked on screw will be some hardened grease like beef jerkey and an O ring with a square cross section. There is a company that makes the square ones, but you have to buy 100 at a time.
By taking out the staked in, countersunk screw, the brass dial can be removed.
I used regular round sectioned O rings between the dial and the hub body and havent had any leaks or problems.

    Bob-

Here is what I have now. Sears and Roebuck ALLSTATE locking hubs. Would yours be just a swap. I am having a hard time picturing it. Unless the bolts on the ones I have now are longer...

Let me know what you think
