For my $ I'd go FF. I've only broken one axle, but I was kicking myself for not haveing a full float. Trail side axle swaps are not fun!!!!!
If you use it once it paid for itself. (just my thoughts)

Have a friend who did the swap into a 3a with Moser made shafts. No idea on the part numbers. (I don't have any idea what the part numbers are on my 35 spline 60's either) ;) Moser and the like can make just about anything that you can give them the dimensions on. However if you call them up and tell them, I want flanged axles to fit my 1950's dana 44 your chances are not good ;) Just about any rear axle set will cost you $400 complete with bearings, studs and retainers. I considered the upgrade on a CJ44 before deciding that for the same money I could build a much stronger axle.

I understand how having Moser makes axles to my specs works.
Also understand they will make replacement axles, tapered, flanged, whatever, for the exact application you already have.
My point is that they don't make replacement flanged axles for tapered 44 tubes. The flared/bearing end of the housing isn't large enough to accept a decent sized bearing. I suppose with enough time and money anything is possible.
Is it possible your friend simply had the later D44 flanged axles in a flanged housing, in his 3A, and wanted the Mosers for the extra strength ?
that sounds more likely to me
anyway, would love to see pics if it was done

Well, I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get the FF kit. I'll go ahead and order it this morning. Thanks again for the comments.
