On my build thread Post #74 goes through a similar way of fixing this. The fish plate was done on it and from the inside it was done fairly well. You can see I added strapping to the top (no pics of the bottom). The other part not seen is a SOLID box on the inside of the rail to strengthen it. That area takes a lot of stress with the shock mount - especially if you lose a spring or have issues with one. That is the 'plating method'. Done that with several fixes over the years. That assumes you get the rail clean - straight - grooved and welded inside and out. This will also not get a stock shock mount. It will get a setup like I put on the '51 if you remember it from when you were here.

I have also taken the same section of frame rail from another frame and replaced that section of the frame. Made the cuts angled on both ends flat sides out and tapered the top and bottom. Then added fish plates over the seams. This moves the stress point(s) out - yes - you get two of them, but no longer at an impact point for your suspension. Again - solid box inside the rails to support it with a top and bottom stop at angled points.

When I say solid box - I mean a 3x4 or 3x3 1/8 wall square stock. I've even used 2x2 and trimmed one down and solid welded it to make the piece.

You need to make sure to strap it - top and bottom like this... notice the angled cuts on the top across the frame.

Darn Chuck! That’s a lot more work than I ended up with. This Jeep will not be a Wheeler so I think this will be OK. I’ll definitely keep an eye on it.

    I cut up some 1/8 in.square tube.

Opened up the crack and welded it.

I’ve also been working on the fenders. Lots of cracks, a couple bigger holes and a thousand little holes from self tappers in fender flairs. Cleaned the inner fender well and coated with rust encapsulater. I’m going to paint this Jeep so some very amateur body work is going to be done.

I was just telling my wife that today. The’er far from perfect but Of the 3 CJ5s I’ve owned theses are far better than any. And The other side is just as nice! There’s a couple big cracks that have been welded but no rust thru holes or major dents.

Been since last July that I worked on this one. I need to get this “Going to the Beach Rig” painted before I can move onto my 3B build.

See above the fenders are ready for paint and today the hood will join them up in the attic.

I’m not too busy this week so hopefully there’s not too much bondo on the tub to just cover up.

Top coat was black Camo, then some Dark Green. Under that we found someone did a good job painting Army Green. And found this lettering on the Army Green.

Anyone know Jerry Roach of DeWitt Ark. ?

Under all this the hood (not sure about the Jeep) is Spruce Tip Green.

Almost good as new inside and out. I hammered out 3 small dents and this will need very little filler.

Been slowly taking stuff apart and cleaning and painting before I put it away.

The seats were only tacked to the frames so I got those welded and painted.

Remember to turn on the gas before you start welding! Those plug welds will be fine!

Surprised to find there were a few fuses in this one.

Wish Y’all would stop cutting holes in the dashboard for radios and speakers!!

I filled the radio hole but Cynthia wants to keep speakers. I’m looking for a stand-alone Bluetooth receiver. Any ideas?

I was hoping for something that could be behind the dashboard that didn’t have any buttons or dials, Like the first Kicker one that you posted. I guess it does need a way to turn it on and it’s certainly easier to adjust volume with a on the dashboard rather than on a phone. (Like the $400 Kicker)
