I posted this same question on the CJ2A board and got limited responses so far, I also did a search but didn't see answers to all of my questions.

I am contemplating replacing my 2A's gas tank with a new poly one. One of the downsides I have read about in regards to plastic tanks is that they leak out around the gas camp. My original tank leaked until I replaced the orig. gas cap, is this a problem found in the plastic tanks?

Also-Are the fuel line and pet**** fittings in the same place on the bottom of the tank as original steel tanks? On the MTS website there appeared to be a fitting of some sort on the top of the tank.

    Thanks,
    DC

The original cas cap doesn't fit very well, but MTS makes their own now. I have one on order, I'll let you know how well it works when it gets here.

The Fuel line fitting is on the top of the tank rather than the bottom, and there is no pet****.

Yeah the cap leaks pretty bad and will come off if not put on just right. I lost one on the trail in Big Bear and dumped several gallons of gas before I realized it

To be fair though, I've got a metal repro tank (JC Whitney) that will leak from the gas cap and the original tank did too.

Mine leaks the same as my original steel tank...with the same new cap on both. I like the poly tank much more though.

I bought my first and last poly tank and installed it a couple of weeks ago. I filled the tank about half full and let the jeep sit in the shop. Two weeks later I was almost out of gas.

The cap does not fit well, and it is just a fairly low quality item. No baffles inside the tank like the metal ones.

At some point in the future I'm going to replace the poly tank with a metal one.

Well, the MTS gas cap just came in yesterday. It seems to fit quite well. I'll have to drive it around a corner and see if it leaks. Here's a couple pics. Cost was $20.

I drove it around last night, and it doesn't seem to leak. Sorry to keep you all in suspense. :)

Let us know if it starts...I might have to buy one of those. Although I kinda like that smell of gas in the morning.

Well, I gave it the ultimate test last night, and it failed. I took the tank out and with a little gas in it, I turned it so that the filler neck was straight down, and it leaked. I was able to stop the leak by holding the cap on tight by hand though, so I'm going to try adding materiel behind the gasket and see if that helps.

I'm running an Omix-ADA steel tank in the flattie, with a stock replacement cap from NAPA. The only leak I've had thus far is from the homemade gasket on the sending unit, and even that is only when I overfill the tank.

Foer my money, I'd go with a steel tank. It fits like the original, and no leak issues.

Well, I take back everything good I said about that cap. I went on a trail ride this weekend and that SOB leaked pretty much the entire time. I'll bet I lost 3-4 gallons. I'm going to try and add to the gasket and see if I can get it to seal.

Sorry to hear that, that sucks!

I think I am going to try to salvage my current tank.

After reading the information about the Poly Fuel tanks I am even more concerned about our delima.

We have a 1967 CJ 5 - apparently at one point the fuel tank was moved to the rear underside of the vehicle. The new fuel tank measures 22 1/4"X16"x9" and is some where between an 11 and 14 gallon tank.

we have discovered that all of a sudden we can only use the top 3.3 gallons of fuel then we run out of gas. So, we dropped the tank thinking that the fuel pickup hose had a hole in it or had broken. Only to find that the tank has no way of getting into it to fix this... so off to the web we went to find a replacement tank. Now for the problem. NO ONE has a tank this size. JC Whitney has one that they say is made for this year but it is the one one that goes under the driver's seat... and the fill hose is at the rear of the vehicle.

We found one slightly larger - but guess what...there is no way to mount it because the size of the tank and the size of the frame make it impossible to mount.

Does anyone know where we can find a metal or poly tank that is same measurement? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All my life I have wanted a Jeep... and now that the children are finally raised and out of here I thought we had the time.... we have had some great times already in our little Jeep... but now with this news... wow...new carb last week... new master cyclinder the week before... does this part ever end?

She is pretty darn cute though. Thanks for the info I printed it out for my husband and brother in law.
