Thesa, you have to expect some tinkering with an old car of amy make or model. So, no, that part never ends. Carburetor and master cylinder are common service parts.

Moving the fuel tank under the floor in the back is a common and worthwhile modification. Jeep moved the tank there in 1971 and later Jeeps, so a tank from those Jeeps will fit. If you want to move the tank back to under the seat, you can.

That sort of thing happens a lot with old Jeeps - the previous owner makes a non-standard modification, and since there's no documentation, the current owner has to figure it out as best as they can. Sounds like you do not have a later-model Jeep fuel tank. The Jeep fuel tanks use a pickup tube combined with the fuel level sensor, so if you remove the sensor, the pickup tube comes with it.

<edit> BTW the Jeep specialist suppliers, like Walcks, Turner, etc. will be much more helpful than JC Whitney. I'd suggest you avoid JCW - no better prices, lousy service, expensive shipping, slow arrival.

We have pulled the float and there is no line connected... maybe all we need to do is replace the float.... we figured it was mounted to the bottom of the tank. since the fuel line with the fuel filter connects to the tank just to the left of the hole where the float goes in.

    Thanks for the continued information,
    Thesa

Yes, that's what I would suspect. If it's a Jeep tank, it'll have a vent for the fuel vapor recovery system that originates from the tank, not the removable float/sending unit thing. That's not going to be a very effective source for fuel though.

The pictures here are good: http://www.troublecodes.net/articles/jeepfueltank/
You can see the float assembly in the top left picture. It has a metal tube that sticks down into the fuel. In that same picture, the tank is filled through the large tubes coming from the corner of the tank on the left, and the vapor recovery vents are the smaller lines on the right.

Does your tank and sending unit look like this?

no the tank is completely rectangular - it looks like a big... well not that big box tomorrow when the light is good I will snap a photo... it is not rounded on any side it is all 90 degree angles. It looks like the tanks made for I think the 78's but smaller.

Just a suggestion - once you get your pics, start another thread with an appropriate title in the Early CJ5 forum. We've gone off-topic here.

bump for updates on the poly tank leaking?

Also what are good suppliers for the steel, or poly tanks.

Found out this weekend my tank is pretty much beyond repair.

I am using the repo metal tank, however, I treated the tank with a sealer to promote longevity.

I just buy mine directly from MTS, I know that other places carry them but MTS will sell direct and it gets here FAST. Dave's very friendly and helpful.

I kept reading that they leak out the gas filler going around corners badly. That you have to buy the special MTS gas cap for the tank, and even then there is a strong chance that if you tilt or take a corner too fast it will leak. They also do not have the internal baffle the steel tanks have I read so the fuel sloshes a lot more.

Neither of mine have leaked at all, but I guess I didn't think of "leaking" as being sloshing out due to ill-fitting gas caps. Heck my original underseat tank did that.

Though I didn't think of that because neither of my tanks are underseat. One was my Willys truck the other is my '71...
