The 11" backer plates I just bought seam to have a rear wheel parking brake set-up and the 56 I am puting them on has a transfer case parking brake. Any suggestions? This will be a first time brake job for me.

PS I have to be at least $500 in parts all ready. Everything new from MC out but plates and drums.

Take the drums to an automotive machine shop and ask them to measure them for you. The drums have a spec for oversize, something like 11.05". The usual procedure, if they are under spec, is to put them in a brake lathe and turn them to resurface. Turned drums are as good as new, IMO.

The backing plates with the cable hole should work fine without the cable. Just leave out the parking brake arm.

Cooks choice...;) If your tcase setup works keep it, or run a cable to the rear. I have the tcase setup at the moment, but will at some point be running a cable to the rear 11" that I have as it seems to be a more reliable setup.

Don't worry...the money you've invested will be *well* worth it. I had done the 11" on my CJ5, and just re-did the setup on my CJ6. It's an amazing difference in stopping power.

    Boyink,

I am looking forward to the stoping power as I have none now. Currently my transfer case parking brake does not work. Are you suggesting that retrofit my setup to use the rear drums? Any tricks to doing this? Again this will be my first brake job.
    thanks

Yes - since the 11" drums have the accomodation for the parking brake cable you can setup the Jeep to use them rather than the transfer case arrangment.

Seems like I've heard that using OE parking brake handle with the 11" drums wasn't the best way -IIRC someone said they just didn't get enough pull in the handle to get enough brake pressure.

But...since I have the OE handle yet (and it remains operational even with the full rollcage) I plan to try that first, and only look to install a different handle if it doesn't work well.

All of the ebrake parts from a '72 - '75 CJ would be very easy to fit to an early CJ, including the foot-operated mechanism.

The unit in my truck looks the same as what I had in the CJ... you could probably find a pedal assy that would work at the pick-your-part. The foot-operated units set the brakes really well.

There are a couple of tabs on the body for the assy IIRC - easy if you have a welder.
