I'm not new to my love of Jeeps but I just got my first vintage CJ. When I got married I had to sell my 97 TJ and have been without a Jeep for the past 6yrs, the wife was worth it though. Well we recently decided a second car was needed and my wife said I should look at getting an older car that wouldn't involve payments so I decided I was going to get something I would enjoy. I just got a 62 CJ-5. It currently has a Buick V6 that I want to do my first rebuild on. Actually I'm thinking about completely stripping down the entire jeep and rebuilding it. I was wondering if you all new of a good book or place to help me with my rebuild. I purchased the Jeep CJ rebuilders manual today but I don't think it has enough on the V6 for me to rebuild with just this. This CJ also has a 3sp that I would like to replace. I do some highway driving and would like to got faster than 55. Could you give me some good options for a trans to replace this with. One last thing I would like to work on is the lack of power steering. What are my options for power steering. Thanks for reading and I look forward to your replies.

payments on a newer vehicle would have been cheaper..............find a warn or saturn overdrive to help your hiway speeds. Any practical tranny swap would have the same high gear ratio of 1:1.

A saginaw steering swap is in order. Manual would be an improvement over the ross steering.

    Have fun.

There was an overdrive already installed when I purchased this CJ but it still doesn't feel safe at true highway speeds. (65)

I'm sorry I did use the search function but I was hoping that someone could direct me to a thread for my specific situation as I'm not much of a mechanic. I'm hoping that this project will be a good learning experience. I'm not even sure which Buick V6 I have. The only distinguishing marks I could find is the firing order which says 1 6 5 4 3. I also don't know where to get a powersteering pump to start this project.

Pat Gahnal's (sp?) book on the Buick V6 is recommended.

As far as faster than 55, you need to tell us what it's doing so we can help you fix the problem. I've had my '71 at 70 mph on I70 w/ no issues.

Nothing wrong with the three speed, it's durable and cheap and easy to work on, esp. since you have an OD already.

See the Buick V6 portion of the Tech Section for casting numbers, that'll tell you which V6 you have. Back of the block right in front of the firewall.

Since it's a '62, I assumed it has 5.38's, which would limit the top speed....

w/ an OD? He'd be at roughly a 4.035 gear. That's not going to limit you to 55. Mine w/ 3.73 gears loafs along around 2500 or so IIRC.

    Oh, S-Rage, Welcome! :D

Thanks for the information on the casting numbers I didn't see them until I took off the air filter. I have the numbers now but I don't see the V6 tech forum. Sorry I'm trying to not ask stupid questions.

So if I'm reading this right I have the fireball 198 V6 which makes sense since it says fireball on the air filter. The casting numbers are B 1361552-1M. Does this seem right. If this is true is this going to be an easy rebuild as far as finding replacement parts. Thanks again.

Doh! I was afraid of that.

Well, it's not impossible to do. But not as cheap as a 225 or 231.

There's a few guys around here, me included, that have 198s. Mine doesn't run.

I chose not to spend $100+ on a starter for an engine that has a rod knock.

Kanter Auto, http://www.kanter.com/ , has rebuild kits for the 198. Allthough if you swap the bellhousing a 225/231 (which are pretty easy to find possibly) may drop in and be in running condition for a lot less $$. JMO!

The 198 if it's in good condition it's a fine engine, if it's not in good condition I favor ditching it for something less "rare". They were only made for 2 years and share virtually nothing with later V6s. They do share alot with the 215 V8 though. So if you find one of those in good shape it'll drop right in and bolt up.

Otherwise you need a new bellhousing for a 225/231, which you can find that info in the Tech Section archives too, a comparison of the bellhousings.

Now I'm confused because those numbers don't show up in the casting numbers list.

    You sure it's not:
1381552 which is an intake casting #?

Which is a 225 intake casting number.

Yeah it could be 1381552 and I think it is the number from the intake. I don't think I'll be able to get a block number without removing the engine. Its right against the firewall.

Umm isn't the block # on a tab on the pass. side between the 2 forward cylinders? Keep looking S-Rage.

Please fill out your personal info so we may dispatch a local to help you out if needed. I'd start with a first name. ;)
