How tough is it to bend 1.75 DOM with a mechanical bender??? I like the air/hydrolic, but that is an expensive option on most.

Using a Hossfeld, two guys will work their asses off at the end of a 15 foot handleR)

 

Not too bad if it's only 0.120-wall. I'm pretty average size (165-170lbs, 5-10) and I can pretty much 1-hand 1.5-inch. Got to put my back into the 1-3/4. You can tell the difference when bending welded seam vs. DOM vs. chrome moly. People who say there isn't a strength advantage don't know what they're talking about.

Benders come with a handle stub, then you slide your own rectangular steel handle over. I made mine around 2.5-3-feet long. If I was bending 0.250-wall or something silly I'd make a longer handle for more leverage.

 

What about square tube? or the rectangular stuff?? I don't have much on cashflow but fabricating my own cage would be a nice project.
I just couldn't afford a tube bender

 

Hi, here's some pics of the cage I built for our 46 2A two years ago...The whole jeep is in the middle of a frame up resto-mod. The plans are to repaint it the original Normandy blue color, instead of the baby blue, and it'll be mostly stock with the exception of a t-98 swap, Holbrook long leaf suspension, and an OD and PTO set up...

 

That is one wicked cage. Are you planning on driving through a tornado? Nice job!

 

yea im not gunna lie, it looks like your planning on jumping the grand canyon or somthing that is a beefy cage. deffinantly a resto mod with a cage like that, i dont think it would exactly be "period correct"R)

 

im thinkin about doin a cage im thinking about gettin hydrolic tube bender from harbor frieght has anyone used one

 

Lots of good fab work ! As the bases on the rear of mine was not going to the frame, I ran a 3" x 3" angle iron full length on top of each wheel well as a base plate. My thought is that this will distribute the " load " along a larger area. Pre-drilling holes along the top of the 3" leg also provides an attachment point for tie downs etc.

 

I don't have a cage but was wondering if any of you guys drew those up on cad programs, paper or just just winged it with the idea in your head??
Reason is I'm saving up to having a cage fabricated for my 65 cj5,
I stink at drawing and "ain't don't got me no cad proogram"

 

There is a comp. program called Bendtech that is supposedly great to use. Although I've never used it, its supposed to basically tell you everything about building the cage, all the angles to bend and what length to cut the tube.

 

I've got BendTech Pro. I haven't put in a lot of time using it just yet but it's very cool. It allows the user to calculate angles, notches, amount and weight of material used, etc. In my opinion, the coolest thing about it makes calculations specific to the user's particular bender and material used- though you're required to make a test bend with each given material. I haven't been able to use it since I have a bender but no tubing. Xtrm4XJeep builds cages and uses BendTech. From a previous conversation with him, it's a good product.

Yep, it is a great product. I have yet to learn all of it's features myself but what I use of it so far it works good.

Mike you haven't started bending yet?? What have you been doing all this time. R)

No bending yet. No money for tubing and I need a windshield before I can get started anyway.

Not a problem, reception there is always difficult once everyone starts rolling in. That's scary that you meet someone I know, who was it?

When I go to Jefferson, I make it a point to hit every single swap space, rain or shine. I guess I must have been walking through a little too fast because I didn't see the guy with the windshield frames. I found probably 5 or 6 people with CJ stuff and talked to them all with no luck.

I think the name of the guy who said he knew you was Adam? He had a business card for his buying/selling Jeep parts.

If nothing else, I'll probably see you up there in the Spring.

Heres some more cage pics...

79cj5 Dovetailed (cut 12" out of the back) and rebuilt the inner fenders so we could move the seats back. The owner is about 6' 5" and 325 lbs. So he wanted to have plenty of room. Still got to add a door bar but ran out of tubing There is 100' of tube in this to give you an idea.

 

top still looks low for the owner Jason... R) R) he (the owner) is a big guy...
