Just FYI - a '74 produced in September 1974 seems very unlikely. Production of the current model year ends in the summer, tooling for the new model year is installed, and production starts before the release date. The 1975 vehicles would have been released by fall, so the Jeep should be a 1975 model. If the VIN starts with J4, it's a '74. If the VIN starts with J5, it's a '75 model even though it was built in 1974.

If the yellow and black sticker is gone from the dash, I suggest you look at the engine build date (tag on the valve over) to get an idea of when the Jeep was built. Typically the engine was built within a few days of when it went into the chassis.

It still has the vin tag on the dash. I'll report back with the info.

Jeep is registered as a 1974 model and has never had a title since it was purchased in Alabama and has never been tagged elsewhere. Alabama only requires a title for 1975 and newer vehicles.

Wow, that's interesting. High sequential number too, 96441. Could they have made 96,000 vehicles in 1974? Maybe the changes were so few between '74 and '75 that Jeep just let one year run into the next? I know of one minor difference that I noticed in 1975: the normally removable floor panels are welded in - only the trans cover is removable. This foreshadows the new floors for '76, where the driver's floor is one piece with the passenger's floor (IIRC). Anybody with a '74 have this feature?

Oh, and a '75 has a fuse box - different wiring harness. Pretty sure all the '74s have inline fuses.

Mine doesn't have the removable floor other than the trans tunnel and all the fuses are in-line.

In 1974, no, not officially. The official colors in 1974 were Renegade Yellow and Renegade Plum. Jeep was easy about special orders though, so it's possible there could have been a few exceptions. Also, from 1973 on, you could purchase a Jeep with all the Renegade options and the dealer could add stripes and wheels to make a "Renegade." Any combination is possible. Possible but not official or likely.

Just to add in...I just re-aquired my dad's 74 Renegade that he bought new. It looked identical to this picture, "JEEP" placement, V8 emblem, decals and color. It is Renegade Orange. According to him it was a 75 color since it was a late 74 production. Well, minus the other two round decals that have been added.
