A couple of us including me have replaced the stock heater motor with one from a later model chevy. Makes it blow alot harder.

Lookin at those too. One of the older mech friends of my dad's did a custom job in the middle section between seats. It had vents out the back, side, front and duct lines to run a defrost system... All this in the late 70's in a CJ2A with a 289 in it... He used copper lines under the body then hose on the inside for hookups. Worked like a charm Elk hunting.

remember to get the control wires w/gm blower motor. also need 3/4-1" spacer depending on avaible room in housing. I have this setup in mine, and it works well.

It'l never work. I have seen those 300 watt things. In fact Mother had one when we had a beetle. Like totally pathetic. Keep fussin' with the stock heater. Possibly bust the budget and get one of those aftermarket jobs and stick it in the back. Those electric things can barely keep knuckles warm 3" away from it if it is actually cold outside!

I'm planning one of these in SSDutch, unless a cheaper but as effective method comes along:

    http://www.heatercraft.com/heating.htm

I'm hoping to fit in one of the 3 output versions - one for defrost and one to each end of the dash.

Can't use the original Jeep heater as my power brake setup will be in that spot.

I bought a heater from JCW. A Square box (8"x 8" x 8" approx.) ment to be used as a remote or extra heater. I mounted it under the dash. It does have a port for defrost. Works very well. Two speed fan, however in a CJ I find that High is all you need.

What is the output of the stock alternator? Can it handle the 25 amp draw? Would wiring have to be changed if the stock alternator is swapped for a higher output one?

i was wondering the same thing, but i should have no prob with the new 1 wire i put in

i did not change anythng when i installed mine but i did a complete rewire at the same time. all you would need is a power wire and maybe an exicter wire depending on what alt you went with

just got off the phone with heater craft and they do sell direct but he told me it would be cheaper to go with jcwhitney, summit, or 4wdh. all three of these guys sell the actual kits that include ducting and such. to order direct it would coest 180.00 for the 2h and 307.00 for the 3h then an additional 13.00 for there switch, 12.50 for the venting and 13.00 if you wanted a y piece to split the 2h into a 3 vent heater. the guys says that teh 2h would heat a jeep plenty. here is what i found at jc whitney (this is the 2h) http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ProductDisplay/s-10101/p-5029/c-10101

Dang...that's quite a price difference. Shouldn't it just be 1/3 more?

Still not convinced the 2 duct would be enough - I want enough heater that it'll keep up at speed -- when most of the heat is getting sucked out of the softop.
