just curious of what temp your guys' motors generally run. this past weekend i had it in first and second in 4wd most of the time with high rpm and the eniging never broke 170 degrees. and this is with a very dirty radiator.

Mine runs at 190. Somehow the stock radiator for the 4 cylinder keeps up with the V6.

155-160*. Can't seem to get it up to temp (w/ 180* 'stat). Could just be where I have the temp gauge screwed in on the intake.

I used to have cooling problems with the V8, but since I went to an Aluminum racing radiator, I run a 170* stat and I can watch the temp gauge run up to 180 open the stat, cool to about 150* slowly raise back up and after about 10 minutes it steadys at 170*. I got this radiator from http://www.speedwaymotors.com it was about $150.00 when I got it. Cheaper that a stock 3 core radiator.

I much rather see 190 than 170. A little cool I think to keep the engine clean.

thats why i was asking actually. i thought that was a little on the cool side. before i tore this thing apart and did the rewire i was running around 180-190. well finished the rewire i hdnt run the jeep in awhile so i flushed all the sytems and put a new heater core in. and now as you all know i am running at 170* and this was in the sun at 70-72* running with higher rpms than normal. after watching this all week day t day driving im lucky if im getting up to 160-165. is this bad?

My dauntless V6 likes to run 180, but will creep up to about 190. I've got a 180 thermostat.

V8 runs around 185-190* consistantly. What temp thermostat are you running?

The CJ5 (F134) has a 180° tstat in it, the M715 (351M V8) has a 190° in it. The CJ5 seems to like the 180° and doesn't try to overheat, the M does OK too although the temp will creep up in 95°+ weather if I sit at a light. Aux electric cooling fans seem to take care of that though.

[De Niro]You talkin' to me? You talkin' to ME?? [/De Niro] :D Ha ha you must be talkin' to me because my sending unit is wayy in the back, but it's the only place to put it. On my other 3 V6s, there's a boss & opening for the unit on the front below the carb...but that does not exist on my intake. I wonder why?? What diffo does it make in temp degrees whether it's in the front of the intake or rear? Which is the "real" measure, and why?

Here's a couple pics below. The first is where my sending unit is located on the intake (on the passenger side, rear). Erik, based on your low-heat symptoms, this is where I thought your S.U. was located until you posted above. The second pic is the non-existent front-passenger side availability for any temp gauge. Anyone else have this setup on their '71 or other?

Grrr, wondering why I'm stuck at 155-ish and not getting heat from the heater 'less I use cardboard on the rad.....
Sorry if this is a hijacking offense.

Alan: Your Jeep is just plain WIERD :p R)

On mine, the temp sender is on a little boss about where that heater hose in in your 2nd pic. It points straight out to the fender.

Now on your heating problem. Make sure that you have your heater hoses connected properly. The output hose to your heater core should come from a fitting in the intake manifold, on the pass side rear. The output from the core should go to the lower intake pipe of your water pump.

On what diff does it make as to the location, it's because near the thermostat housing is the absolute hottest the water will get before going into the radiator.

Can you tell if my hoses are hooked up right from the pic? I don't know which is which on the heater core...which is output or input?

In case the pic isn't clear, the heater core hose closest to the firewall goes to the water pump, and the core hose further from the firewall goes to the intake near the thermostat. Is that correct? :?

This weekend we went wheeling sun and monday, and once again it never broke 170. its running real good right now though aside from being a little to rich

Alan: First of all, where your sending unit is, is where the output to the heater usually goes. Mine has a 90* pipe pointing to the heater with the hose clamped on there.

Second, your hoses are hooked up backwards. Think about it. At your thermostat housing you have "pressure" water. That hose should go to the pipe on the core closest to the firewall (inlet). The pipe closest to the grill should go to the water pump. Remember, at that point on the pump, the pump is sucking water from the bottom of the radiator--so it's also sucking the used water from your heater core.

So, switch your hoses and I think you'll get a lot more heat.

Also, if you have a spare intake, think about taking the correct pipe off the old manifold and putting it where your sending unit is. Put your sending unit at the thermostat housing. You'll then have heat AND correct temp reading. :)

Thanks for the explan, Jim!! I'm actually glad that my hoses are hooked up backwards cuz that's an easy fix. I've never understood the flow of water thru the engine anyway, much less how/where thru the heater core. So I doubt I was capable of "thinking it thru". R)

Couldn't I just swap places with the pipe & temp housing in the current intake?

Hey Erik, what's the verdict on your hoses?
