I received an email from the company stating I'm supposed to connect the throttle cable to the stationary stud on either carb. That is throwing me off because my existing one isn't.

They haven't responded yet to my second email request asking if I can trade up to a Holley 470.

They are claiming you should be using the other stud on your original carb. The new carb has a stud in a similar location.

    You could call them ...

The cables sold with the stud attached threw me off. The one that was on it (which i thought was stock) along with this new one I have has a stud with a nut to attach it to a hole:

I'm intrigued by the Holley suggestion, and there is very little negative feedback on the web I have seen. I could have called the company, but their mind may not be back til after the holiday weekend. I'll wait til Tuesday because I can't be in a hurry. Three years of tinkering off and on........

i used to run a 650 on a 301 Pontiac and had good results a 600 would likely work well on a 304

I've got the Motorcraft that I bought boxed up and ready to send back tomorrow. I am exchanging it for the Holley "T/A" custom 600 built by National Carburetors. They believe it to be a great choice for the 304. Hopefully I'll have it by the time I get my transmission and transfer case back in the jeep. I'm getting close.
